The DTU PhD Supervision Programme

This educational programme aims to prepare PhD supervisors for the challenging and important job of supervising future researchers in the PhD process. The programme focuses on themes like the half-year reports, dialogue tools, aligning expectations, the three years of a PhD, and the well-being of all involved persons.


The programme consists of 4 modules with the thematic headlines:

Module 1: Rules and regulations in the process

Module 2: Me as the supervisor

Module 3: Educating a researcher

Module 4: It takes a community

After the programme you will be able to:

  • Orient yourself with DTU- and national rules for PhD programmes
  • Create a PhD plan, half-year reports, and supervisor report
  • Use dialogue tools to enhance and develop PhD students’ processes
  • Reflect on how awareness and listening skills can be trained and implemented in PhD supervision
  • Apply flexibility to an ideal PhD plan to fit the concrete project
  • Use self-efficacy principles to support PhD success
  • Plan for the first success of your PhD students
  • Prepare and carry out peer supervision in groups in a structured way and give each other feedback
  • Support the well-being of both your local PhD School, your PhD students, and you as a supervisor

Module 2 and 3 on 7-8 October, 2025:
Supervising the PhD Student and Supervising the PhD Research Project, Rungstedgaard (with accommodation)
Module 4 on 25 November, 2025:
It takes a community, DTU, Lyngby Campus
Workshop on 9 December, 2025:
This workshop is where the certification of your supervisor portfolio takes place

You sign up for module 1 by sending an email to employeecourses@dtu.dk. It is mandatory to pass this module before proceeding to the rest of the programme.

The course is aimed at main supervisors, but co-supervisors are also welcome
